What would it be like if our technology was: slower; less resource intensive; tied to natural cycles; and more communal? This installation is an attempt to create this type of technology and to reflect on technology and its relationship to landscape today.
The 30 days of this installation will run between the 1st June, and run for the 30 days of June, going through one full moon cycle. During the 30 days of installation, you are invited to collaborate in this experiment.
The installation comprises a digital screen, digital camera and a website, all of which have been built following permacomputing* principles. You can add frames to a growing 360 degree photographic representation of the landscape by rotating the camera to a position and are invited to leave reflections on technology and landscape for other visitors to find via a corresponding website. The images you add will be shown on the screen if there is enough power in the system and your text will slowly find its way into the 360 degree images. You can also steward the system out of the sticky situations the landscape might throw at it, by leaving warnings of extreme weather and low battery levels on the website.
*Permacomputing applies permaculture’s idea of self-sustaining ecosystem design to computing, promoting a reduction of power consumption of digital devices, use of sustainable power sources where possible, and an aim for open-source, modifiable hardware and software. https://permacomputing.net/Principles/
